Copper in Nutrition

چکیده

Background Copper is one of the most critical of the essential trace minerals required by animals. It is vital in the body as a component of (or cofactor for) enzyme systems involved in iron transport and metabolism, red blood cell formation and immune function. Included in almost every trace mineral premix (blended to provide mineral supplementation to animal rations) is enough copper to satisfy the minimal nutritional requirements of broilers, turkeys, pigs and cows. It has also become a common practice in the United States and elsewhere to supplement broiler and swine diets with 125 to 250 ppm additional copper to enhance health and growth.

A prevalence rate of 30 cases per million and a birth incidence rate of one per 30,000 to 40,000 are often quoted. In 40 to 50% of individuals with WD, hepatic dysfunction is the initial clinical manifestation. With the exception of liver transplantation, treatment of WD is only palliative and intend...

Changes in serum levels of zinc and copper have been found in lymphoproliferative disorders. In the present study, the...

New Aspects on the Role of Copper in Human Nutrition: a Toxicological Approach

(Scientific Chronicles 2013;18(1):7-12) ABSTRACT Although it is widely accepted that copper plays a key role in human nutrition the clinical picture of its deficiency is not always so straightforward. Moreover, serious concerns about the overuse of copper dietary supplements arouse when investigations revealed that copper toxicity in humans has probably been underestimated. This paper reviews t...

The study was carried out an average 2.7 yr (range 1 to 5 yr) after intestinal resection. Balance materials (diets, urine, and stools) w...

The risks of copper toxicity contributing to cognitive decline in the aging population and to Alzheimer's disease.

It is a pleasure and an honor to contribute a paper to a special issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition honoring Stanley Wallach and Pearl Small. In this brief review I advance the hypothesis that copper toxicity is the major cause of the epidemic of mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease engulfing our aging population. This epidemic is recent, exploding in the las...
